Purpose of Position:

Teach and assess student learning outcomes in introductory biology courses appropriate to the first two years of college. These include courses in anatomy & physiology as well as other biology subject areas, many of which serve health science programs. Some biology courses are taught online in Blackboard. In collaboration with colleagues, assume responsibility for ongoing curriculum evaluation and student learning improvement within the context of the Illinois Articulation Agreement requirements and the college’s articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities. Facilitate student learning outside of the classroom through participation in student activities, college, and community events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Learner-centered Instruction: Teach biology courses according to relevant student learning objectives. Regularly assess student learning to continuously improve instruction. Teach evening, online and/or off-campus courses, if necessary. Provide office hours conducive to student schedules.

• Curriculum Development: Develop and/or revise course(s) in collaboration with colleagues and in alignment with the Illinois Articulation Agreement. Propose and develop interdepartmental course offerings that meet the articulation requirements in biology.

• Technology: Integrate instructional technology as appropriate in the discipline of biology, including appropriate use of laboratory equipment. Willingness to learn to use Blackboard to offer online course delivery and/or web-enhanced course components, as the need arises.

• Involvement: Support College-wide initiatives and serve on committees. Mentor and support adjunct faculty in biology.

• Professional Development: Initiate and maintain active participation in professional development opportunities that encompass the disciplines of biology and teaching effectiveness.

• Philosophy: Continually strive to achieve the college Mission, Vision and Purposes.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in biology from an accredited college/university required.

• Teaching experience at the college level in biology preferred.

• Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the community college required.
